The Everett Fireman’s Relief Association and the Everett Fire Department held their annual memorial program inside the Ferry Street Firehouse on Sunday, June 14. A crowd of nearly 40 gathered to honor past and present members of the Everett Fire Department (EFD) who died this year. The Everett Police Department (EPD) Honor Guard accompanied a group of Everett firefighters into the station after downpours forced the ceremony indoors. Accompanied by traditional bagpipes. Pvt. Steven Meninger served as the master of ceremony, and invited the Rev. Coots, chaplain of the EFD, to offer an opening prayer.

State Representative Stephen “Stat” Smith was the sole elected official to speak at the event, bringing the greetings and prayers of the Massachusetts State Legislature. Smith discussed the importance of honoring of the many brave men who have served as Everett firefighters, and asked every resident to keep those currently serving in mind as well. EFD Chief David Butler offered solemn welcoming remarks, reading brief biographies of those members of the department who died this year. The roll call of the deceased included Private Wesley A Carpenter Jr., a 30-year member of the department, and also John E. Penney Jr.

“It is important that we take the time to honor all firefighters and the challenges they take on each day,” said Chief David Butler of the Everett Fire Department. “This ceremony is just a simple way for us to keep these brave civil servants in mind and honor those we have lost during the last year.” Captain Joseph Hickey performed “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes as a fitting, musical tribute, following the roll call and bell response. A special addition to the ceremony was the talented Michele Colameta, who performed two musical selections, “God Bless America” and “The Star Spangled Banner”.

Firefighters representing the Everett Fireman’s Relief Association, Local 1656, and the Everett Veterans Fireman’s Association placed wreaths, which were moved later. Reverend Coots once again rose to the podium to offer a closing prayer, reflecting and reciting “The Fireman’s Prayer”. Paying homage not only to the firefighters but also their families, he recalled the bravery and the ultimate sacrifice of those firefighters lost in the tragedy of 9/11. He reminded the crowd that they should serve as a constant reminder of the sacrifice of firefighters across this nation.

The Everett Fire Department operates three engine and two ladder companies providing protection throughout Everett’s 3.8 square miles. The department employs more than 100 career firefighters who answer over 5,000 calls annually. The department continues to face unique challenges with a major electric generating plant, a liquefied natural gas terminal, and a petroleum terminal all within the city’s borders.
