| With a hoard of new families moving into the city in recent years, the city’s school population has exploded. According to school officials who discussed the rising population at the School Committee meeting Monday night, more than 6,000 public school students will be starting school here in just a few days – and the end number when all is said and counted, will be greater than that.
“Where will they all go?” asked School Committee member Lester McLaughlin. Superintendent of Schools Fred Foresteire told the School Committee not to worry.
“The new enrollment is spread all around the public system in all ages and categories,” Forestiere said. Indeed.
Records show that Everett’s public school population has risen by almost 900 students since 2007. In fact, the record shows that in 2006-2007, there were 5,322 students system wide, compared with 5,512 in 2008 and 5.630 in 2009.
The total stood at 5,934 as of Monday. However school officials cautioned that new enrollments were still pouring in , and at a rate of 30 to 40 everyday. The 6,000 threshhold should be passed by Wednesday.
“When is the last time we had a 6,000 enrollment in the city?” School Committeeman Frank Parker asked Foresteire. “About 20 years ago,” recalled Foresteire.
Officials explained that school enrollment here is rising because of an increased birthrate in Everett that exceeds cities and towns around it by a wide margin. In addition, the city is experiencing a surge in population, and that population includes new families with multiple children.
