The Everett High School boys basketball was set to play Lynn English in the Division 1 North semifinals Tuesday night at Beverly High School.
Everett, co-champion of the Greater Boston League, had advanced with wins over East Boston, 77-65, and Lowell (56-48).
Everett (16-6) entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed. English, tri-champion of the Northeastern Conference Large, is the No. 7 seed with a 17-5 record.
Interestingly Everett and English met on the football field in the 2011 Division 1A semifinals, with Everett prevailing on its way to winning Super Bowl. The two schools annually scrimmage in football.
The Pope John High School boys and girls basketball teams were ousted from the Division 4 North sectionals of the State Tournament.
The Pope John boys team, led by coach Dave Sacco, fell to St. Mary’s, 65-51, in a quarterfinal round game Saturday. It was St. Mary’s who ended Pope John’s run in the Division 4 North sectional final last year. Pope John finishes its season with a 14-7 record.
The Pope John girls team, led by coach Shawn Thornton, defeated Manchester-Essex, 53-45, in the quarterfinals before falling to Fenway High School, 64-55, in the semifinals.
Pope John finishes its season with a 19-3 record. One of the highlights of the season was Thornton earning his 100th career coaching victory.
