Everett swimmers excel for the SandSharks

Three Everett youths are competing for the Revere SandSharks Swim Club this summer.

Nine-year-old Alyssa Schastny, 11-year-old Kaya Small, and her nine-year-old sister, Ilyana Small have been training for their first swim meet of the season scheduled for Thursday at the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club.

The team, consisting of 25 boys and girls, has been practicing at the Jordan Boys and Girls Club swimming pool in Chelsea. The SandSharks will compete in five swim meets.

SandSharks coach Liz Alessi, a former swimmer at Regis College, said the Everett girls have been improving their times in their events.

“Alyssa is a great little swimmer who’s really improving after being with the team for one season last fall,” said Alessi. “Ilyana nearly set a record in the 8-and-under girls division last year. She’s really great in the breaststroke event. And Kaya is one of our co-captains.”

Some of the Sandsharks swimmers competed in the Bay State Games at Harvard’s Blodgett Pool earlier this month.
