According to my current bill (Annapolis, MD), I am now paying about 12.5 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity, plus additional costs for infrastructure and delivery. Much of the electricity actually generated in Maryland still comes from the low cost sources of coal and nuclear, but the marginal rate is determined by the last generator needed to provide the power demanded. That "last in" generator is normally a natural gas peaker, which helps to provide exceptional profit margins for the owners of the coal and nuclear plants because they, fairly enough, are able to sell at the same price as the gas plants.
