Soccer boys defeat Classical in finale

The state tournament-bound Everett High boys soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a nice 4-1 triumph over Lynn Classical on Senior Day Saturday at Glendale Park.

Senior members of the team, all of whom were on the field at the final whistle, were keeper Eric Westphal, Philip Cunha, David Carvalho, Ryan Canillas, Marcos Rodriguez, Deva Torres, Fernando Oliviera, Mike Garofalo, Fradin Zaber, Yobany Portillo, and Fred Ramos.

As for the game itself, junior David Lima potted two goals and freshman Diego Pena reached the back of the net to give the Crimson Tide a commanding 3-0 lead at the half. Although Classical closed the gap to 3-1 with a marker after the intermission, sophomore Felix DeBona provided an extra cushion for Everett with a goal to account for the 4-1 finale.

“It was nice to end the regular season on such a positive note and give us some momentum going into the tourney,” said EHS head coach Fred Jannino, whose team ended up the year at 9-5-1 and who punched their ticket for a Journey to the Tourney two weeks ago.

The coach in particular praised the efforts of Westphal in net and the defensive trio of Cunha, Carvalho, and Eric Chajon.

The win also was important because it all but assures the Crimson Tide of a home game in the opening round of the tourney, which will not start until November 7, giving Jannino and his crew plenty of time to work on their fundamentals and rest up any of their lingering bumps and bruises.
